Plastic Surgery and Reconstruction - Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, involves the placement of implants to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. The implants are usually filled with saline or silicone gel. The surgery approximately takes 1 to 2 hours.

Application Types of Breast Implants

There are 2 most common types of placement for breast implants.

First option is the placement over the muscle where locates under the glands which called “subglandular” placement. Advantages of over the muscle (subglandular) placement are; easier placement of implants and possibility to implement into desired location, painless post-operative period, faster and comfortable recovery process and cushy to get used.

Second type of breast implants placement is under the muscle “submuscular” placement. Advantages of under the muscle (submuscular) placement are; working away from breastfeeding glands, pressure of muscles enable the implants to have a more natural appearance.

Key Points to Consider

  • Placement type of implants mostly depend on anatomic features of the patient such as chest and rib cage structure, muscle laxity and skin flexibility. Best method should be decided in consultation with surgeon.

  • Choosing the most appropriate implants (brand, type, size and shape).

Post-Operative Care and Recovery Process

Patients may need to wear a special supportive bra and avoid strenuous activities for a few weeks. Swelling and discomfort are common initially, but these symptoms subside over time.
